Early County Courthouse

Fondly referred to as Early County’s “Grand Ole Lady,” the Early County Courthouse was constructed in 1904.  Two courthouses previously served Early County, the first, a log structure that was first used in 1827 and the second, a two-story wooden structure built in 1834.  The current courthouse was built when Early County citizens wanted a newer and more commodious brick structure.  The building was constructed by W.T. Jay of Shellman, Georgia for $50,000.

Peanut Statue

In 1954, the people of Early County, which as been known as the “Peanut Capital of the World,” erected a monument in tribute to the crop.  The crop is largely responsible for the growth and prosperity of the community, as well as, the higher living standards of the people engaged in its producing, manufacturing, and marketing.  The monument sits on the lawn of the Early County Courthouse.

Confederate Flag Pole

On May 16, 1861, the flag pole that currently stands on the Northwest corner of Blakely’s Historic Court Square was erected.  This stalwart pole, hewn from a long leaf pine that grew one mile southwest of Blakely, is the last remaining Confederate flag staff still standing in the United States.
